The good: - Large menu - you can pretty much get whatever sandwich you want - Cheese was excellent (and swiss is free!) - Sandwich was huge - Good service (although nobody else was there when I went) The bad: - Roast beef and bacon were nothing special in terms of taste - Dutch crunch bread isn't all that great either - Don't get the avocado, it's a paste (instead of slices) and tastes a little off - Expensive. I paid $10 for my sandwich. - Probably not that healthy - depends on order, though. This is the kind of place where if I came back a few more times, I'm sure I'd find an order that tastes amazing and would totally be worth the $8 or $10 or whatever. Unfortunately, what I got the first time around (roast beef/swiss/bacon/avocado/mustard on Dutch crunch) was merely OK. If you're going to pay 10 bucks for a sandwich, Ike's on Stanford campus is probably a better option. Edit: in full disclosure I was absolutely right: their smoked turkey and ham are really good and I've been back here quite a bit since my original review. Four stars.

Wow. Awesome sandwich place. Don't worry if there's a long line and it's moving slowly. Once you get your order in, it should pop out pretty quickly. It just takes forever to order because people sit there going "uuummmmm" from all the choices they have. All the items are quality, and the pricing isn't too bad. Sandwiches are solid sized, filled with a good portion of meat and cheese (assuming you order them). Kinda weird how swiss cheese on your sandwich is free, but any other cheese is + $1. Not really feelin' that, to be honest. But, overall, a great place tucked away in the shopping center. I highly recommend it.

It's 1145AM, do you know where your children are? If you live in Palo Alto, and they go to PALY, then they are probably packing the Cheese House. I used to come here when I was in high school, but boy did this CASA-O-CHEESE get a makeover. It used to be gray, homey-like, with more shelves, and little walking space. NOW, Va Va VOOM. International snacks, "collectible" sodas, sweets, and I can see the pretty chalk board and the white walls! It was a nice change. I ordered a basic turkey sandwich-EXTRA BREAD. Go in...you'll know what I mean. Watch out for drink prices, some of those puppies can run you $2.95. And before I forget, don't bring a backpack, or if you need one...there are plenty to tickle your fancy complete with high school love notes-just watch out for the security guard!

I love delis! Delis are so simple and delicious, but there aren't enough of them around! The Village Cheese House has the best sandwiches. You can choose what kind of bread, and their sourdough and dutch crunch are amazing. They have every kind of meat imaginable, like prosciutto, chicken, and regular deli meats. They have so many cheese and spreads! I love their fresh mozarella and cranberry sauce. You can customize your own sandwich and make your own delicious sandwich. I can't say enough. They can also make your sandwich toasted! I love delis, and this is one of the most amazing!

Great old style family deli that is actually big and modern inside! They have tons of different sandwiches hot or cold you can choose from. Note you take a number and order then go pay in a separate line but your sandwich may not be ready yet. You can choose all the fixings and for $5.99 you get a HUGE sandwich with 3 pieces of bread and cheese!! I'm like why is this sandwich so thick and I removed my extra pieces of bread so I cold actually take a bite. I ordered the smoked turkey on wheat bread and jack cheese and this sandwich was so good! You could eat just half and be fine but it has those pepperoncini's inside that give the sandwich a huge kick so you will want to eat it all! The store also has all these cool retro candy that you can get as you wait: Gumballs, rasberry licorice, gumballs, European candybar's like Ritter's sport, etc. They also had tons of different chips that I passed on it every flavor of Kettle, etc. If going at lunch time make sure you get there before 11:50 since all the high school kids show up and a huge line!!

Hands down this place is THE BEST for sandwiches in the area. The first time we checked this place out there was a super long line out the door :(. But, destiny brought us back a second time and there were no lines. The sandwiches are super BIG and super FRESH. You truly cannot go wrong with any of their sandwiches. Salads were so-so unless your a fan of the potato salad. The establishment was super clean and there was outdoor seating. I wish there were indoor seating when it is chilly. If you have not been here, then you got to give it a try!!!

VCH brought a HUGE smile to my face: -Fanciful, gourmet, exotic and throwback items: Haribo gummies, bottled root beer, flavored licorice, Japanese gummies. -A ticketing number system to temper the waiting crowd. -Prices were low, starts at $5.99 for a double-decker. -TONS of Kettle Chip flavors, got the Buffalo Bleu & NY Cheddar. -Special 'spread' concoction: mayo & mustard. My smile disappeared when I saw the long line of people, 4 staff working, but it STILL took 20 minutes to get out of there. I can only blame incompetence. Smile came back when I broke into the paper bag and devoured my sando & chips.

Probably the best sandwich in the PA area... if you can find it! It's hidden in the back corner of the Town and Country Plaza on El Camino. It's a shame they're putting a Trader Joe's here soon. Parking is a nightmare!! A few of us wandered over here one day for lunch and it was chaotic. I almost gave up when the parking gods opened up a spot nearby. Typical deli... take a number and order. The bread and cheese are soooooooo good and fresh. The sandwich was $7 and totally worth every penny. If it wasn't so complicated to find a parking spot, I'd go here more often.

WOW!!! Never new sandwiches could taste like this! Their sandwiches are different from any other sandwich shop I've been too. Their portions are huge and everything tastes fresh; from the bread, to the cheese, to the meet, and the vegetables. This place makes their own roast beef which is their most popular meat. What makes this place stand out from the rest is their house spread for the bread. Instead of mayo, you NEED to get the house spread!!! I don't know what they put in it but it REALLY makes the sandwich THAT MUCH BETTER!! I would eat here all the time when I was in high school and I still come to this place! If you haven't tried it, this is a must! If I could I would be a promoter for this sandwich house! =) HANDS DOWN THE BEST!

The Cheese House makes delicious sandwiches. Without question the best in this area. The look of the place has definitely changed for the worse in my opinion. The old setup was really funky with tons of random specialty food items including a huge variety of hot sauces. The new owners did a total remodel and really yuppified the place. Don't get me wrong it is very nice inside, but it doesn't have the same charm as before. As for the food, it hasn't changed. They still make a mean sandwich. The dutch crunch is the go to bread here. It's the best I've had anywhere. I usually get my sandwich on the dutch crunch or sour dough roll, because I'm a huge sour dough fan, theirs is good but not quite as good as the dutch crunch. When you get a sandwich pick your meat and bread then say with the works. This is the way to go here. There are so many options, but this is the best one. You get all the fixings with their delicious spread. The spread is what makes these sandwiches so good. The default cheese is swiss but you can sub out another one for a bit more money. I have tried almost every meat they have on the menu but my favorites are the turkey, ham, and salami. Oh, if you get a sandwich on sliced bread it comes triple layered with 3 slices of bread. It is a big sandwich. I can usually only finish off half and I'm a big eater. Parking can be a hassle sometimes. It gets super crowded with all the Paly kids coming for lunch. But the lines move fast and the sandwich is worth a little wait. This is my favorite sandwich place as of right now.

Big tasty sandwiches for just under $10. The dutch crunch bread and house spread are good choices.

I come here all the time on my lunch break. If you like sandwiches, I can't imagine why you wouldn't love the Village Cheese House. Their meats are delicious and high quality, their cheese is impeccable, and no matter what kind of ingredients I get, one thing stays consistent: I get it on their awesome Dutch Crunch bread. Oh, and their original spread really adds to the greatness of this sandwich shop. Even with a line--which frequently happens during lunch hour on a weekday--I'm in and out of here quick. I never really browse, but they have nice and (presumably) expensive candies and assorted small-market foods. They have a decent selection of juices and sodas for your beverage needs, and they offer some good looking salads that I'd like to try some day. Overall, it's a great establishment that's conveniently located in a back corner of the shopping center across the street from Palo Alto High School.

I want to rate the Village Cheese House 4 or 5 stars, but my conscious would be angry with me if I did. It's because I have consistently been disappointed in the early afternoon by the VCH being out of bread! This has happened more times than I can count (certainly over 10). A cashier does apologize, usually, blaming some Stanford game or some other event. But that's unacceptable, because they constantly know they will run out of breads. How about ordering some extra bread? It's OK if you use 1-day old bread. These events are an unacceptable reason to not plan accordingly. They're right next to Stanford, and they always advertise all the games ahead of time. And a tiny bit of back office research can fill in the holes. It makes me sad to publicly complain about a place that would otherwise deserve a kind review, but I'm terribly tired of the disappointment.

AHH! This place brings me back to my Paly days when their rolls and ranch would fill my belly almost everyday, and they were oh so cheap ($1.25-1.75?). From what I recall, the store used to be much larger and had a "homey" feel to it with all its wooden architecture. Now, the VCH has been modernized, but still provides somewhat of a small, quaint feel. You can still find plenty of unique goodies to add to your pantry. As an avid collector of hot sauces, I can assure you they have a fabulous hot sauce collection. Check it out! Their sandwiches have been consistently drool-worthy. I used to get salami with "the works" on a french roll. It was gigantic - enough for two small meals, but most of the time it was one big meal for me. No matter how much I told myself to stop eating and save the other half, I rebelled and consumed that giant mass. I can verify the legitimacy of the VCH even to this day, 9 years since my first bite. VCH, please be in my life forever!

Good, well balanced sandwich. Pricey. Highlights: Generous portion of cheese, fillings and meat. Offers nitrate free turkey. Good bread, recommend Dutch Crunch. Lowdowns: Price- starts at $8 and add-ons are $1. Not the fastest service, even with multiple people behind the counter.

Lived near Palo Alto all my life and have been going here for years. Thought the new owners would mean more efficiency. Not the case. Went in at 11:15 for a sandwich. No one else was in the store at the time. Waited for over 15 minutes as I watched a staff of five including the manager walking around with no idea what they were doing. Person making my sandwich finally started it after about ten minutes. Took him a while to make it and of course, got the order wrong. After over thirty years, I'm done.

Tum YUM--I AM VERY ADDICTED TO THEIR SPREAD--Do not say no to the spread--The bread and the quality meats are always fresh--Even on a sunday--LOVE THE VCH

They make the only Tuna salad sandwich I'll eat beside my mothers. Yummy! It's great on the Dutch Crunch, too! Love it! Dang, now I'm craving it! Their only, and I mean ONLY drawback is how busy they are during lunch. With high school students from PAHS, which is across the street. Other than that, the place is superb!

This is my favorite sandwich place in the Bay Area! What's it all about? THE YELLOW SPREAD. If you like the spread that is served at In N' Out, you will love the Village Cheesehouse. It's a hearty sandwich and sometimes half of it will fill me. I always stick to their turkey sandwiches with the works and sourdough roll. If you get a sandwich with sliced bread, it will come with 3 slices of bread. It always reminds me of Ross from friends talking about "the moistmaker" in that Thanksgiving episode. He takes the Thanksgiving leftovers and soaks a piece of bread in gravy and puts in the middle of her sandwich. Yum.... You have to love all the random knick knacks in the store. They have foreign candy as well as a wide array of hot sauces. It's terrific. Sometimes, I'll go and their cheese selection is small though. I'm not sure why. They do have my two favorite cheeses though, Cowgirl Creamery's Mt. Tam (triple cream) and Humboldt Fog (goat cheese with ash). Lines can be long because Palo Alto High and Stanford students like to hit this spot. Would not recommend going when there's a football game at Stanford because the lines will be insane!

I'm all about great sandwich places, and The Cheese House definitely falls under that category. Everything tastes fresh. Great selection of cheese, as well as other fine deli items (chocolates, chips, crackers, etc.). One drawback: there isn't much seating at all. A few tables outside (none indoors) that are usually occupied by high schoolers. But, the space is really small and there's not much they can do about that! Not their fault so I'm not taking a star away. Everything you'd want out of a sandwich place. And probably a little bit more. Also, I saw Andrew Luck here one day. If he likes it, it's gotta be good! :) GO CARD!

My favorite sandwich shop on the peninsula - they literally have everything that a classic italian style deli will have. The sandwiches are huge but you can always save the other half for later (or not..)! They are known for their special spread and the store/deli is so quaint and such a staple of the bay area. Definitely try it!

i miss the old cheese house..... with all the hot sauces, the big black dude who worked there and would make fun of our squinty eyes and let us sit in the freezer when it was hot.... its not as homey now.... the sandwiches are still pretty amazing, but there was something about the old place that made it taste better... not as much luv from the staff i think...

Stumbled into this place because I was hankering for a sandwich. Ordered the corned beef sandwich with swiss cheese. Pretty good sandwich but I've had better... the swiss cheese however, was excellent.. lending well to the name of the establishment. Two stars for the average sammy and because it took forever for me to get my food - like 18 mins! And there was 5 staff behind the counter!!! (it was NOT crowded...) Where's the efficiency cheese house people!

Really sad. After the original Village Cheese House owners got pushed out by the plaza owners who replaced them with a couple who happened to be their friends, the place really went downhill. Not only did they cut off over half of the store, they got rid of their cheeses and gourmet food selections! It's not even a CHEESE store anymore for goodness sake, it's simply a sandwich store (which by the way, the "special sauce" is the original sauce recipe that was signed over to the new owners) with chips and drinks. No more worldly cheeses, handmade Christmas baskets, wines, unlimited candy selection, and interesting foods that the local European customers knew and loved, and Americans loved to try. The reason why I gave this store a 1 star is because I revisited the place after the new opening, and I was highly disappointed with the customer service and new look. The sandwich makers didn't know anything about what they were making, they only knew to take your order and replicate it as best as possible, At the old store, you could ask what's good and they will make you a YUMMY sandwich that your taste buds never had the chance to experience before! And if you became a regular, you knew everyone who worked there and they would welcome you back and remember your usual order or know what you might like next. It was a family store run by a couple who loved to make their customers happy with cheeses, wines, and foods from around the world. They were then run out and replaced by a couple who has done nothing but cut the store to a meek existence, steal the original sauce recipe, and PRETEND to be the original owners coming back after the Town and Country Village Cheese House renovations. Everyone who has known the original store is greatly disappointed upon arriving, it's a sad day when you realize how cut throat and secretive corporate businesses can be.

The build your own sandwich is clutch! Be ready to spend about $10 per sandwich, but these things are huge! And VERY fresh! I will be heading back here again!

Store doesn't give discounts to workers in Town and Country shopping center. This is just rude because I work in the center and a sandwich costs more than what I get pain in one hour! The store I work at provides 20% off to people who say they work in the center. My sandwich cost me a TOTAL OF $12 NOT WITH MY DRINK (add avocado that isn't sliced! Looks like gross guacamole. I added pesto that was way over priced to be a topping charge) My sandwich was missing tomatoes and this isn't the first time I have had MISSING TOPPINGS. The sandwich then GOT ME SICK while I was at work! Thanks for the DISGUSTING and OVER PRICED sandwich that got me SICK! All of the positive reviews are silly. People try Prima Deli, Ikes, Woodside Deli, Sandwich Spot, Mr. Pickles, even supermarkets make better sandwiches! You people don't know what a great quality sandwich really is! You think because it costs a lot you are getting high quality sandwich..Well you are wrong! and eventually your going to get sick from this place too! Never going back!

can i just say, VILLAGE CHEESE HOUSE IS THE SINGLE REASON FOR WHY I HAVE TO FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE FROM A FOOD BABY. ive lived in palo alto my entire life, and i still can't get enough of it. classic veggie with swiss and sourdough roll (you gotta have SF pride and go with the sourdough--okay fine, maybe their homemade dutch crunch is acceptable every now and then). extra veggies. i dont even like veggies, and just thinking about the class veggie sandwich makes me melt. i cant tell you if its the "special sauce" (its actually AMAZING and not just thousand island dressing like most special sauces) or just the pure and fresh style of this place, but its hands down the best sandwich i have had in my entire life. it could double its prices and id still be a loyal customer. i dont know what i did to be so fortunate to have gone to school across the street from this place, but whatever it was, it was destiny! try anything here with the special sauce and some sort of roll as your bread--you cant go wrong.

The Works with smoked ham. Oh god, it's divine. I love this place so much. If you hate the wait, guess what? You can call in your order! All they need is about 8 minutes to make your sandwich.

  • J. B.

I like this place a lot. Great sandwiches. They have plenty of meat and cheese choices, all good quality. The sandwiches are fairly large and they are differentiated by various spreads. I personally just go for the original spread, on dutch crunch and go from there. It can be busy so maybe call ahead or go after about 1pm. oh yeah, and if you can't find it it is waaaay in the back corner of the town and country.

My go-to-place for sandwiches since Oakville Grocery closed (sigh. the memories. I'm still recovering). The sandwiches here are large, decently priced (order "the works" and try the dutch crunch bread - never heard of this bread on the east coast but it has grown on me). The wait can be a bit painful during lunch time so you may want to get there a little early or a little later as others have mentioned or do some shopping in town and country and come back. On the weekends, you can sample different cheeses which is fun.

Honestly, I was totally in the mood to have my socks knocked off by a kick-ass sandwich.. but the mood slowly died as I was relatively unimpressed by my "the Works" sandwich with chicken. I hate to say it, but overall, I couldn't taste much of a difference from a basic Togo's sandwich. The two friends I was with concurred. Good, fresh ingredients? Yes. However, prices were elevated from your standard deli, but I can't say my tastebuds were.

I had my first cheese house sando when I was 6 years old and 20 years later they are still very good. I liked the old store better as far as the huge array of odd items, but the modern counter is a nice update. The sandwiches are always on point just like the house spread. About the prices. They are very reasonable for the quality of ingredients used. The old cheese house was a few bucks cheaper. You get what you pay for. The one thing I miss is taking 10 cents off for each veg you don't want (tomatoes, onions, ect). Doesn't make a big difference at all but it made the old spot unique. Zoe salami and swiss on light rye with pickles, spread, peppers and onions - AWESOME.

I am a sucker for local delis and sandwich shops. This is no exception, I'd heard about how great the sandwiches were so after a shopping outting I stopped by. The sandwich was MASSIVE so really half would have been perfect. Even so it was really tasty. When you go, take a number...stupid girl over here whizzed right by that part but they were super nice about it. I would have given 5 stars if they carried lemon san pellegrino...orangina is a good alternative though.

Best place to get a sandwich in Palo Alto. They offer a nitrate free turkey.

I used to come here during my grad school days...I recently returned and it's good to see that it hasn't really changed during the last few years. I hope this place never changes. I admire a place that can do something unexpectedly delicious with five ingredients (their regular sandwich - you choose the meat): sliced turkey, wheat bread, pickles (generous amounts - the sour slices, not the icky sweet ones), Swiss cheese (a couple of slices worth) and the "special" sauce. These are double decker sandwiches with three slices of bread; the pickles and cheese are tucked on one level and the meat on the other. They slather on the special sauce, which is creamy and like a cross between mayo & mustard. It's really good and basic, especially if you like pickles and cheese like I do. The sauce doesn't squirt out either, so the sandwich is constructed well. If you ask for the works, you get lettuce, tomato, onions, peppers and more. You can choose another type of cheese (Swiss is the standard) for an extra charge. The store is also charming...they carry imported candy bars (Kit Kat, Yorkie, Curly Wurly, Aero and the like), about a dozen kinds of Jelly Bellies in single flavor bags, retro sodas (e.g., Moxie, Faygo), quite a few fondue pots, savory snacks, malt balls and domestic candy sold by the ounce, deli salads, huge dill pickles, picnic baskets and imported European mixes, canned goods, etc. It's a hodge podge of goodies. VCH is in the back of Town & Country Village, rather hard to find but worth searching out. There are no tables, so most people sit right outside to enjoy their sandwiches.

UPDATE: after several years the "new" owners of this business have finally "mostly" gotten the service part of this operation down pretty good. The last few times I have been there I got what I ordered with no mistakes in a timely manner ... BUT, I have to say the quality of the ingredients is not as good as they used to be. These are now just pretty generic sandwiches, not really the deli sandwiches I used to get as a high-school teenager eating lunch there in the good old days. So, I'll leave the rating alone, but mention service better, quality worse ... overall still OK. -- First, one must make a distinction here between the Village Cheese House that was here for decades that I used to eat lunch at when I was in High School across the street from Palo Alto High School in the 70's and the Cheese House of today after the Town & Country remodel. I loved the Cheese House of old and would give them 5 stars in a jiffy. The family that ran it did a great job and I have memories going back so far of reading on the benches and T&C during lunch break and eating their sandwiches almost every school day. The new Cheese House I am a bit ambivalent about and so the mediocre rating. I want to like the new Cheese House. I must I keep going there and giving them a chance figuring they are new and it takes a while to get up to speed. I'm assuming that they'll get it right eventually. The problem is every time I have been there something is not right. Mostly I come in and see people behind the counter, often a lot of them, milling around trying to look busy but not helping customers. I have stood there for a few minutes until I catch who I assume is the owner's eye and she has to ask one of her staff to go and help me. Eventually one what looks iike high school kids will saunter over to take my order. Often the sandwich is not the way I ordered it. Usually it is some minor thing that I just ignore, but twice it has been a totally different sandwich. They don't seem to quite have the rhythm of working as a team down yet and that may come in time, but it often takes quite a while to get out of the checkout line as well. So, the sandwiches are very good, but you have to be aggressive and on top of them to make sure you get what you ordered and can get in and out in a reasonable amount of time. The ingredients are fresh and tasty. They have a great selection of drinks and goodies, but not as much as the old store did when it was a true deli with a giant freezer and lots of unique imported foods and gift ideas. Conclusion is give'em a chance, they are new and it's hard to equal a cohesive family team that had been there for decades, but do not cut them any slack, complain if they don't get it right, push them to get it right. They have a winning location and a winning product, they need to get their performance up to snuff!

It's become an increasing fad for fellow Stanfordites to eat here. I can see why. The sandwiches are delicious! Their house sauce is a bit much, so I usually get oil and vinegar. If you're feeling extra motivated, you can eat half of a sandwich and feel pretty full - save the other half for a mid-day snack. Hah! Oh, and if you go here - you gotta get your sandwich on Dutch Crunch. It's the only way.

Huge selection of design your own sandwiches that are made from quality ingredients. The place is fairly tiny but has outside seating. It is in the back of the shopping center. When you enter there is tons of candy and semi-store made goods. The menu is a bit much because they really want you to make your own sandwich. They have one pre-made sandwich and a special of the day The special suace they put on the pre-made sandwich is some sort of mayo based sauce. The pre-made sandwich has three slices of bread. I got the pastrami and it was good. Its about $10 for a sandwich and a drink. I only ate half of my sandwich so I got another serving out of it. It was a solid sandwich but wouldn't go out of my way to get there.

This is the place my dad and I always go to when he visits me at school. Ike's is great for hot sandwiches, but I haven't had a cold sandwich better than VCH's. To be fair, this place has a lot of emotional value for me, but there are a couple things that convince me that my love for VCH isn't a delusion. First, their dutch crunch is fantastic. It's sweet and just a tad flaky on top; no other dutch crunch has come even close. Second, their original spread is amazing. I miss when they would mix pickle chips into the sauce, but it's still pretty damn good! Ultimately the only real downside is the long wait. Even when the line is really short, you're looking at a 20 minute wait at best.

Mmmmm... I have dreams about these sandwiches! Yelp helped me find this place when I started working in Palo Alto again and needed a place to go for lunch. They did not dissapoint. "The Works" is the way to go. So far I've tried the Turkey, Ham, roast beast, cornned beef & pastrami. I reccomend the Cornned Beef or Pastrami! I do have two warnings about this place. 1) If you go there between 12 & 1.30 expect to have at least a 30-45 min wait. With the businesses around and Palo Alto High across the street this place draws a BIG lunch crowd. 2) If it's your first time coming here, try to go INTO the store to order. Your first experiance of this amazing sandwich shop should be the way it was ment to be, ordered fresh. When I've called my ordered in for a lunch time pick up there has been something lacking in the taste. So go! Enjoy, you'll thank me later.

The sandwiches are overpriced BUT totally worth it. I have had the sandwiches before and after the ownership changed, and the only difference I see in the sandwich is the price. I always thought it was just me, but after reading some of these reviews I see I'm not the only one who feels the staff could be friendlier. In my many experiences at the Cheese House, I have found that the staff pretend to not see you waiting at the counter, and like one other person said, the owner has to tell them to go help you. In addition, I always feel like I am inconveniencing or somehow annoying them when I place my order. It's so obvious, that someone should really say something, but it's not a good idea to be rude to people who handle your food. I'm assuming the owners are aware of the behavior, why has it not changed yet? If you don't like making sandwiches, go work somewhere else. Update: After seeing a picture of the owners on their website, I can now say I've never seen the owners in the store. The woman with blonde hair who I've seen numerous times now must be a manager, and not someone I'd keep on staff if I owned the place.

My all time favorite sandwich. I CRAVE them when I'm not at home visiting family. It's probably better that I don't have access to them, because I would eat one every day and gain 30 pounds. :) You can't go wrong with an old fashioned...YUMMY. I do miss the old space, it's too "Palo Alto" now. At least the new owners have kept the consistency of the taste. If you are in the area (and I mean within 30 miles) try it! You will not be disappointed. Just make sure not to go on a weekday during lunch hour- you will be swarmed by the Paly students.

OK , my review is a little harsh for a place that I LOVE. These are some of the best sandwiches around , but now that they have changed a few things around cheese house is WAY too expensive and it takes WAY too long to get your food! I called today to order ahead and they put me on hold for 15 min so I hung up and went in and after I ordered it took 20 min to get my sandwich. They need to hire more people or something! Also 8 bucks minimum to get a sandwich (it's usually more). But...if you are really looking for a good sandwich and don't care about the wait/price..go here. Get dutch crunch and the special spread, yum!

The sandwiches are really really good. Avoid lunch time during the week when the high schoolers stream in (although they add an extra line for them). I like that you can use the "orderahead" iphone app to avoid the often 10 minute wait while they prepare your sandwich.

  • Dani Z.

Not sure what all the hoopla is about this place. They makes so-so sandwiches for Palo Alto prices. I'd much rather go for a Togo's sandwich any time. Plus the place gets inundated by high school students from across the street during lunch hour.

When I think of sandwiches I think of cheese, lettuce, tomato, sprouts, avocado, onions, you know all the basics. Village Cheese House dispelled this stereotype of sandwiches I had. Their "old fashioned" sandwiches involve lots of bread (sometimes 3 slices), cheese, lots of meat (or for the vegetarians out there, even more cheese), pepperoncini, and a mayo based, pickley-mustard spread. When I was in high school at Paly, I was obsessed with this spread- it's really good. This might be the most unhealthy and expensive sandwich I have ever had. They have made the sandwich smaller and the price much higher since I was a regular customer. The staff is rude (I probably would be rude too if I had to deal with spastic high school kids all day). My basic thoughts about Village Cheese House are much like my assumptions on heavy drug use, if you have never tried it - don't you will be addicted or worse you will be come haunted by the romanticized memories. I know I am.

The Cheese House is awesome. I often travel to Palo Alto for business and have made this a regular lunch stop. The ingredients are incredibly fresh and they make one heck of a sandwich. Great beverage selection as well...lots of rare international and micro brew stuff. As far as carryout delis go...this is one of the best.

Unless you have 2 hours to kill, don't bother going to this place. I had heard about their "amazing" sandwiches from multiple people, and the sandwiches were pretty decent. But that wasn't the issue. We went on a Sunday afternoon. We arrived at the Cheese House at 1:45 p.m., was able to order at 2 p.m. and received our sandwiches at 2:30 p.m. - yup, that's right - the 45 minute sandwich. We didn't order anything extreme - just basic stuff off the deli menu. And the sandwiches are about the same cost as Whole Foods. For the money and the hassle, this was DEFINITELY not worth it. We tried to speak to the manager to complain about the awful service, but even he wouldn't give us the time of day. What a joke. There were at least 6 or 7 people working there but I had never seen such slow service. I will not be going back. Ever. And I love sandwiches.

Excellent Sandwich! Lot's of options. High quality eats at a price that is totally reasonable - especially in Palo Alto. It can be a little slow so don't go if your already 15 minutes late for work and are hoping to get in and out in 5 minutes. Spread Love!

7.99 basic pick your meat, cheese, bread, spread, veggies type of sandwich. got a turkey swiss original spread with all veggies on dutch crunch. The original spread is some kind of sweetened mayo spread (like egg salad). nicely layered fresh ingredients and special sauce is not like the wet special at Ike's, but is as expected for this kind of sandwich -- good, reminds me of Luttickens.

I did love the array of cheese choices when I went in for a sandwich. They have more than just sandwiches, they have every undulgence I could need- chocolate, cheese, organic ice cream sandwiches! The people were friendly, especially the cashier. The brownies are DELICIOUS. The sandiwch was OK. I would try another one next time (I had the works no pickles on dutch crunch with turkey). Maybe the hot meatball? Mmmm...

This isn't the Village Cheese House of my childhood but they are definitely doing well with the sandwiches. They are big and good and it's a great place to stop in for lunch especially if you are short on time. It is close to Palo Alto High School so try to avoid their lunch hour if you want to avoid a line!

Holy crowded cheese house, Batman!!!! It's been YEARS since I have entered these doors...I scratched my head as we moseyed on in at the posted security guard and the 'Please no backpacks inside' sign...thinking who the heck brings a backpack to the Cheese House? There were two lone backpacks swinging silently in the breeze. Well ten minutes later it was all too clear as the place was invaded by a bunch of high school students from across the street!!! On our way out the door, the 2 original lone backpacks had been joined by about 500 others. Thank GOD we got there 10 min before the crowd entered, at 11:50. Make future note! Because we were there at 11:50, our wait was short for our # to be called, our orders were done in about 7 minutes, which gave us ample enough time to wander around the shop squealing in pleasure when I uncover things like blue raspberry licorice previously only findable in a candy store in Palm Springs; watermelon gumballs that actually are shaped and painted like watermelons; and of course the obligatory biscuit n'choco Ritter Sport which I cannot seem to ever pass up. Sandwich had an overabundance of 9 grain bread (3 layers!) and cheese, you could easily make a separate bread and cheese sandwich for a snack later should you become hungry ... which is doubtful because these $7 sandwiches are friggin' huge and could feed a linebacker. A ton of meat inside which I loved...smoked turkey w/some spicy pepperjack and THANK YOU Cheese Village for putting pepperoncinis inside, my favorite in a sandwich...why doesn't everyone do this?! I only ate half my sandwich which was more than enough...! This is my kinda lunch spot, gourmet foodie shopping can be done while you wait, and we all know I am a huge impulse shopper. Also a fair amount of cheese so it does live up to it's name though it's not all about cheese. I just wish it was closer to work because the jaunt from Cupertino to this area of PA can only be made on special occasion days!

This place is my favorite sandwich shop in the Bay Area. A friend introduced me to it a few weeks ago, and I've since been back twice...unfortunately once they were closed. Their hours are more suited to lunchtime visits. Great sandwiches with lots of choices. Just writing about this place makes me hungry.

Listen, I used to love this place, probably ate there dozens of times when I was in high school. Recently the store underwent a change in management and a huge face-lift renovation, but the prices - as expected, I suppose - went up, the portion size went down, and just general quality decreased. The food is okay, everything is clean and well managed, but though the name remains, the Village Cheese House did not keep its sparkle. The sparkle is gone. The new store design is nice and clean, but they definitely only stock a few specialty food items and have higher prices than before. If I had never known its prior glory, maybe the new business wouldn't hurt so much. But it does. Right. Here. I just really was not impressed by the new management. I talked with the new owners, a wife and husband team who are novices to the business but very nice. Maybe they will put a more distinctive touch on things as time wears on. Until then? Definitely going to JJ&F instead!

Reasons why I love this place: 1. CHEESE. I love it. It's pure cholesterol and oh so bad, i know, but it's also oh so good. and these are generous with their cheese. believe me. 2. dutch crunch bread, veggie sandwich, their spread, making 2 meals out of it. 3. ginger beer or even better cream soda 4. did i mention cheese? 5. Oh yeah, and picking up candy while i'm there... i liked the hole in the wall it was before this remodeling/price increase took place, but i'll still go here when i'm in the mood for a big, homemade sandwich. if you ask for it with everything, watch out for the onions and the peppercini's because they really slather them on...and you might not want to be so purulent if you're going back to work =) I usually order the veggie, and i can't imagine it tasting better than that.

I never had a chance to visit this place so I can't comment on service or anything really except the sandwiches. So how about them sandwiches? Huge. About 8 bucks, and 2 meals for me. It was always hilarious watching people attempt to eat the entire sandwich in one sitting. Rare, but when it happened such person went into an immediate food coma and if time allowed a quick nap. When there wasn't time I have no idea how they went back outside to run around with kids.

I suspect that this is one of those places that you have to be indoctrinated into, you know? Someone needs to warn you that their sandwiches are unique. Please allow me to do this for you. They are basically a deli. It used to be more of a supermarket, but people only ever got sandwiches there, so they remodeled and now are mainly a deli, with some nice chocolates and chips and sodas to choose from. They have a wide array of meats and cheeses. Very impressive. So what is unusual? The sandwiches are like a Big Mac! They have a piece of bread in the middle of the sandwich. And everything comes with their "sauce", which is yellow mustard and mayo mixed together. If you are not a mustard fan, explain this to them. I don't think I saw plain mayo as an option, but it simply must be. I did a lot of dissecting of the sandwich in my car, and ultimately threw it out, since I don't care for mustard with what I ordered. I do, however, recognize that for the mustard and bread lovers out there, and for the high school students that want food quickly and in large portions, this place is just great. The portions are big, the sandwiches, while not cheap, are not too overpriced, and the sandwich makers were super nice. There. Now you know. Cure the munchies at your own bread-chomping risk.

Props to the sandwiches and the sandwich makers here! They definitely make my tummy happy! There's usually a wait but not very long... just grab a number and browse their random goodies around the shop. VCH uses a generous amount of meat and cheese - which is always welcome - and unless you want your sandwich supersized (three slices of bread), let them know that you only want two slices. My favorite combo is the old-fashioned with black forest ham on dark rye, add tomatoes ($6.99). There's a good selection of items to complement your sandwich - various drinks, chips, cookies, etc. - so enjoy! Ah, don't forget to linger at the tables and chairs outside on a nice day...

Okay, don't get me wrong. I *really* like the sandwiches at this place, and they are excellent value, but... Longest. Wait. Ever. Expect your meats to be well aged, since it takes these guys forever to fill an order. I've been (pleasantly) surprised to actually get what I ordered, since I don't know how well they track who has what, and what exactly you want, especially when it gets busy. So, don't go in a hurry. However, when you do finally get your sandwiches, they are excellent. I like the Dutch Crunch bread, but other people say everything is good. Plus, a single sandwich can potentially be big enough for 2 meals for some people. So, good value. The cheese house also has some unique 'stuff'. Stuff like imported candies, and Dave's Insanity Hot Sauce, and a bunch of other unique things. So, even though the wait is long, you can look at a bunch of unique little snacks and items. Maybe that's part of their business strategy. Make you wait, so you buy more. Anyway, if you have an hour to kill to get a sandwich, this is the best in town. No doubt.

I finally went, been wanting to go for ages but they close at 6pm and on Sundays. So got there around 4:30pm and I was the only one. Ordered my roast beef $7 on dark rye and shopped around looking for Cadbury English/Australian chocolates. I was looking for a particular candy bay by Cadbury, the Luxury, a Flake candy bar covered with smooth chocolate, less messy to eat. They didn't have it. Maybe they will in the future..hint, hint, hint! hahaha And some Japanese candy. Tons of condiments, candies, drinks and snacks. Picked up a couple of prepared salads, $2 for 8oz.. $31 later, my grocery bag filled with drinks, salads, sandwich, candies, chips and snacks. The sandwich is big, tons of meat and cheese but eat it quickly, the sandwich gets wet from the tomatoes, peppercinis and sour pickles.

Ok so I didn't to the deli, but when you name your place the Village Cheese House, shouldn't you have an assload of cheese? I personally think (and this is my opinion) that their selection is kind of on the small side. I mean many of the fancy supermarkets nearby (Draeger's and Andronico's for example) have just as much if not more. And from the focused items they did have, some of them were quite common place. Perhaps my expectations were too high?

After hearing my friend rave about how delicious the sandwiches were here, I decided to split half of a sandwich with him. We got the prosciutto and mozerella (totally Italian, i know) with simple lettuce and tomatoes with oil & vinegar. It was delicious! I actually got it at lunch time and saved it for dinner, so it wasn't as fresh as it could have been but it was still super delicious. They've got a huge selection of cheeses, and I mean HUGE. But they've also got a very good variety of meats, breads, and even potato salads and other yummies. If you're a sandwich person, you gotta come here! Only negative I have to say that it is slightly on the pricey end. Usually they're $8 per sandwich, but with prosciutto u have to add $2 more.

My coworker and I came here for lunch the other day and I have to say I am very impressed. Not only did it live up to its name, but it went beyond expectations. The meats, cheeses, breads, and vegetables were all so very fresh. The portions??!!! "fugggettaaabouttitt". I ended getting both Zoe Coppa's(Sweet & Spicy) & Brie on a Dutch Crunch with the works. I can honestly say that I can't look at other sandwich places the same anymore. The only other one that might be comparable is Ikes. However even their sizes are a little too small for what they charge. Village Cheese House is recommended for those who want to experience what a true sandwich is SUPPOSE to taste like. Don't expect $5 dollar footlongs here, because you really get what you pay for.

I grew up on these sandwiches. They are famous for their "spread & bread". When I was a kid and I told my mom I was sick, she would always offer me a Cheese House Sammy. If I said "yes".... She knew I was faking and sent me to school. I always said "yes". My kids who are grown and gone, always beg me to meet them at the airport w/ a Cheese House sammy upon their return home. Truly, a family tradition going on 4 generations. The sandwiches are well worth the (what can be) long wait.

Normal I love this place. Not today. For a place that lets you create your own to be told I can't have my sandwich panini style because in an hour it's going to be very busy and we can't hold up others. Hold up who I ask, I'm the only one here and I'm willing to wait. WTF....

This is a great place for people watching and shopping. If you're just looking for a sandwich place then you should find somewhere else that isn't so pricey. Also, parking can be a bit of a patience tester. Sandwiches are pretty decent. I'm not a person who likes the DIY type of menu so I usually go for the special of the day or a veggie sandwich. About the sandwiches... The veggie sandwich oozes a little too much avocado spread which makes unwrapping and holding the sandwich a bit messy. But the filling is decent with tomatoes, pickles, sprouts, choice of cheese, pepperoncini and maybe a few other things. I was pretty full after eating the sandwich and the smoked Gouda tastes great. Dutch crunch bread was good, but didn't have much of a crunch. Toasting the bread a tad would've made the bread delicious! The special of the day happened to have a pesto spread which just overpowered all of the meat filling so I couldn't taste anything at all except for the pesto. Next time I've got to remember to ask for less spread! On a nice sunny day, the tables outside of the sandwich shop are usually packed, but if you patiently watch the tables like a hawk, you can get a table. Worse case you can sit at the nearby benches (no table). In total, the two sandwiches and two drinks totaled almost $23. Quite a bit when you could get similar sandwiches elsewhere for half the price.

This place was over-hyped. The food was okay but not that great. Ordering was very complicated, as prices and items are all over the place on the menu. Even getting in line was confusing. I got a hot sandwich on sourdough bread and only the meat was heated. The meat was not evenly put on the sandwich. The flavor of the sandwich was very good, but the bread was super hard to chew.

The name of this place is deceiving because this isn't a cheese shop but a deli. The only thing I got out of it was a small bottle of habanero (I got the spiciest one; there is a mild version). I saw a few European candies and whatnot but it isn't enough to call this place a specialty store. I might try their sandwiches sometimes.

This place is a great place for a lunch. The freshest of meats, cheeses, produce, and breads combine for the ideal sandwich experience. The sandwiches are very filling and reasonably priced for what you get. The Dutch crunch roll and original spread is a must. It can get a bit crowded on weekends, but it is well worth the wait. Bring a good book or friend and enjoy the sunny patio tables. Perfect for social time with a buddy, people watching or some well needed me time. This place never dissapoints.

Worse sandwhich place. service was awful. it took 25 minutes to make 1 sandwhich and there were not that many customers. they had seven people working also which just blows my mind that it took that long to make a sandwhich. never going there again

This is...a hidden treasure! For $10, you can get a prosciutto dutch crunch sandwich with everything, with their original spread. It's like heaven in your mouth, and a person can literally eat 2 meals with this one sandwich. It's really hard to stop though, once you start! I went once during lunch, and it was a high school kids rush hour. They had a line out the door buying dutch crunch bread and dip? One of the kids told us it was REALLY good. I can't imagine how great it can be, but maybe it's cheaper than a sandwich. Village cheese house has really quality meat, a true deli shop where they cut the meat when you order. You can choose from a variety of cheese, veggies, and spreads too. And boy, the dutch crunch, don't get me started. It's flakey, soft, yet not underbaked at all. IT'S just awesome! Great hidden lunch spot within the Trader Joe's plaza. Get the prosciutto with dutch crunch bread! You can thank me later!

Haven't really been back since they revamped their location. I really enjoyed the older style prior to remodel. Back then it was a more friendly, local type of place. When I popped in after their remod, I just didn't like the vibe & my sandwich didn't like me either. For the $$$, I'd ruther spend it elsewhere. And, there's lot's of elsewhere's to spend my $ on.

Used to be a favorite, been eating here since high school. The new owners cleaned up the decor, but jeez this place is slow. The line doesn't move when it's busy, and on a Sunday at 4pm they took 25 minutes to make me a turkey sandwich (only 1 person ahead of me). Silly service, hopefully they can step this up.

I ordered a custom built salad via delivery (with Fluc) and it was great! I tend to get salads, and this one was much larger than is typical. The vegetables were fresh, vibrant, and crunchy. I highly recommend!

Another restaurant visited in Town and Country Village. Pretty good. Village Cheese House is a build your own sandwich place, but they avoid the common steps taken by Subway or Togo's by the quality of each product. Village Cheese House has their own deli slicer on sight. The meats sliced are at the restaurant to guarantee its flavor and freshness. On my first occasion at VCH, I made a hot pastrami sandwich. On that visit the sandwich was only decent. The pastrami lacked the cured spice that I like from pastrami. I learned that VCH is best known for types their of turkey and ham. So on my second occasion, I made a turkey, avocado, swiss cheese sandwich. The avocado is an add on of $1. I must say that they DO NOT skimp you on the avocado. The sandwich is really good and is hearty in size. I find that many people simply eat half and save the other half for later. I will definitely go to VCH again and possibly build a more unique sandwich.

The first time I came here, I ordered the veggie meatball sandwich and I MUST say that it was H-E-A-V-E-N! The sandwich was big portioned, lots of balance with the other condiments of lettuce, etc. But the veggie balls were omg melt-in-your-mouth freaking good! It was soo good that I took my partner here all the way from Fremont just to try it out a couple months later. But on the 2nd time ordering this sandwich it was not up to par. The veggie balls were cold and the sandwich didn't leave me with the same melt in your mouth feeling. It just felt like a regular deli sandwich put together. I still yearn for the flavor that I experienced my first order eating here. But because of the inconsistency, I hate to do this... it's -1 star =( Until the next time I can get the same experience that I did the first time, I'll more than gladly bump it up to 5 stars. That is, if their sandwiches will stay consistent.

Let me just say I have NEVER written a review for any type of business before and always swore I never would...until my experience today. I ordered a salad, which I was so excited to eat after hearing such great things and having their sandwiches several times. Usually I never pay attention to them making my food but this time I did and I watched the employee make my salad with his BARE hands...no gloves. He proceeded to rip chunks of feta cheese with his hands, and touch every single ingredient that he was putting on my salad, along with wiping his hands on his dirty apron. I'm suppose to eat that?! You have got to be kidding me. I was so bothered by this that I asked the employee at the register if he was wearing gloves while manhandling all of my food. He replied with "no, but he washed his hands."..... Riiiiiiggghhhht. Calafia to-go located in the same plaza or Sprout on University is far better than this place. Never again will I be going here and I suggest you don't either. Not worth it.

The old Cheese House was a dark cavern full of strange and unpleasant looking candies/preserves/dried meat. Yeah it was bizarre and there was pimento everywhere, but damn it- the place had character. I used to live off their sandwiches in my Paly days. Not surprised that other Yelpers feel the same nostalgic longing. New Cheese House is an entirely different beast. Sleek and modern with a small, but well-appointed table of fancy candy. There's plenty of ingredient variety, and they still offer the classic "Old Fashioned" sandwiches (meat, house spread, pickles, swiss). If the line's long (and it probably is), you can sometimes grab an OF from the pre-made stack- they're just as good as the freshly made ones. I come back here occasionally. The sandwiches are still pretty good, but they're more expensive and not particularly mind-blowing. The price/quality keeps me from recommending the place- especially with JJ&F, Driftwood, and Pommard relatively nearby. Still- it's somewhat of a Palo Alto institution, so if you must... get an Old Fashioned on Dutch Crunch. Remember to pour some on the curb for the Old Cheese House.

My experience with this place was mad crazy. They only had ONE sandwich maker for the people in line. 2 other sandwich makers were doing the phone calls and/or catering stuff. They know that lunch is a busy time with both the high school students, Stanford students and employees in the area and THEY HAD ONLY ONE SANDWICH MAKER?!?!??!!? And some girl just sitting there eating her lunch? Ah...they barely opened at 10AM and she's already on her lunch break? The sandwich makers DO NOT CHANGE GLOVES. They open and close stuff, pick up the phones, wipe their aprons, etc without changing gloves or cleaning hands. It took over 50 minutes to get my sandwich done and my lunch hour was over -- not to mention that 2 people behind me got their sandwiches first. Unless you have 2 hours to spend do not go there from 10am to 300pm.

One of the things I admire about the San Francisco Bay Area is the type sandwiches these people like to eat. No seriously, they don't screw around up here, if you want Sourdough bread, it's not that half ass, piss poor knockoff crap that is merely a white bread with an ounce of flavor. No, you won't get that here, you'll get the thick cut, super sour "oh hells yeah" type of bread here, and at the Village Cheese House, this stuff is "hella" good. God, I can be so NorCal when I want to. Anyway, the bread is only the beginning, everything from the deli meats to the cheeses are top notch and the ordering process is a breeze. Check it out sometime, because everyone loves the all mighty sammich.

OK, today's special sandwich ($9.65) = smoked turkey, salami, tomato, provolone and pesto on ciabatta bread (which I switched out for dutch crutch). Tell me that doesn't sound amazing. You don't need to tell me. The sandwich was awesome. Fresh ingredients, delicious combination of flavors with the added crunchy texture of the dutch crutch bread really made for a satisfying lunch experience. The day off from work plus the sunny 70 degree weather could have also added my happiness. Maybe. I shamelessly ate the entire sandwich in one sitting and was a little sad when there was no more. Village Cheese House - why are you so far from me?!? Sigh. Can't wait to go back!

Here's a poor business decision...say you are open until 6 then tell your customer that you have no hot sandwiches at 5:55 because you're closing soon. You saved a few minutes closing up but I'm never coming back here so that's probably a $100 ten minutes you just saved so you can get home sooner. Hope it was worth it. I hate businesses that say they are open but when you get there tell you they stopped serving half the menu...including the half you just raced there to get. Fail.

So this is where all the Paly and Stanford students head for lunch! The Village Cheese House is located in the back of Town and Country Village (and really isn't that hard to find if you just go all the way to the back) and will be nearby the soon-to-be-opening Trader Joe's that will be opening here. I stopped by for a quick sandwich and liked what I saw. The choices are pretty simple: Old Fashioned or The Works, which includes extras like tomatoes, lettuce, and pickles. They also have a "special sauce" that reminded me a bit of the special sauce I had at Ike's in San Francisco. Not sure what it is, but it's tasty and good. I opted for a hot sandwich ($1 extra) and pastrami as my meat choice. Got the classic dutch crunch bread and was soon greeted by a very generously sized sandwich at $7.99. To be honest, though I liked the warmed meat and slightly melted cheese, I was disappointed that the bread wasn't toasted. In reality, it's more a warm sandwich than a hot sandwich, but even this didn't take away from the high quality ingredients and tasty sauce. I liked the interior of the Cheese House too. Supposedly, they underwent a redesign awhile back and I like it. It's clean, filled with a variety of cool snacks (Haribo gummy bears, beef jerky, interesting sodas) and has a nice layout where you can watch the sandwiches being made and all the ingredients being gathered. As a side note, I'm a bit of a beef jerky sucker and will always buy a pack, especially if it says, "the best Gourmet Beef Jerky Ever." So I did here too. I actually found the jerky disappointingly average and think my top three are still 1) Trader Joe's Beef Jerky (nice balance of price and taste) 2) Los Gatos Meats and Smokehouse (though it's way too pricey) and 3) Tillamook Country Smoker (I've bought pounds in bulk). Overall, I thought this was a great sandwich shop and am happy with our selection in the area: Ace of Sandwiches, Dittmer's, and Driftwood. None are quite Ike's level, but if any dabbled a bit in crazier combos (pastrami, roast beef, turkey, and ham anyone?) and toasted their sandwiches nice and HOT, we'd have some competition for the City to the North. The Village Cheese House accepts credit cards but only Visa/MC.

Great sandwiches, but can take very long to get it made. Best bet is to get a pre-made sandwich so you don't have to wait. I tried to order a standard sandwich but on different bread. The guy taking the order could not figure out how to do this on the iPad they use as a register. Finally the manager came over and said they could not make the sandwich! They seem to have a big crew making catered lunches and pre-orders, but service at the counter is extremely weak.

I am disappointed! Yes, they give you large sandwiches but for larger prices. I really like sandwiches and typically get some form of turkey & provolone on a dutch crunch. The dutch crunch here is sweeter than I prefer and the cheese (besides swiss) cost an EXTRA 75 cents. Really, Village CHEESE House? You're gonna charge extra for picking another cheese?? Also, I like my sandwiches toasted and they did not have a toaster, but could make my sandwich hot for $1 more (no thanks!). Interestingly enough, sprouts did not cost extra...as they usually do at other places. As an avid sandwich eater, this place did not meet my expectations. The service was very friendly but I am upset that I wasn't warned about the extra charge on cheese. The original spread is ok (mayo, mustard & pickles I believe) but for a $9 sandwich, I expected my sandwich to be better.

Hecka a big basic sangwiches here. The place was completely remodeled in the past several years. Village Cheese House is not really a 'cheese house' it may have been umpteen years ago but it is more of a sangwich shop. During the regular school years the place gets big time packed out since there is a school right across the street. While your waiting in line you can look around and see some things you might not find in your basic Safeway & Lucky stores such a various interesting types of hot sauce for example such as Kicking Ass Hot Sauce, Mouth Flaming popcorn...get the idea. The Village Cheese House is well tucked away in the Town & Country Shopping Center closer to the back of Trader Joe's then not. Big @$$ sangwichs and I eat the whole thing every time I get one. I also like their potato salad with egg, and of course a cold beverage of my choice. There is a nice sitting area outside the Village Cheese House where you can sit and eat your lunch and watch the array of people stopping in for lunch and those that are desperately trying to find an open parking spot.

I really don't understand how this place gets such a good review. Maybe b/c teenagers who don't know what good stuff tastes like reviews the crap out of this place as it's the only "fancy shmancy" sandwich shop they've ever been to. I mean, the ingredients are not bad. But not worth what they charge. The salami was tasty, the turkey is bland as heck, the cheese appears fresh, but the name of this establishment definitely is misleading. Their pesto was meh. And their bread was meh. Their ciabatta bread cut up my girlfriend's mouth more than the dutch crunch did. How the hell does that even happen?? I got their special which was the salami/pesto/ciabatta combo and wow was it boring. I could have made a better sandwich with oscar meyer meat for godssakes. My gf got a custom turkey/dutch crunch/other crap sandwich and it was definitely better than mine, but still, not worth the price, nor the wait. Service - wow, there was only 5 of us in line and it took me 15 min just to get to the guy to take my order. HOW THE FUCK DOES THAT EVEN HAPPEN??? Are we ordering in French?? Then we wait for another 20 min as the guys behind the counter slowly look at instructions on how to build the various sandwiches. I swear, you go to places like JJ&F in palo alto, or that market on Middlefield and Charleston - where they have sandwich making areas and man, they pop them out like nothing, but this place - ON A FREAKING WEEKEND WHEN THEY HAVE ALMOST ZERO BUSINESS, takes 20 freaking minutes to make like 5 cold sandwiches utilizing 3 people. F that. And i like how they sell "homemade" licorice twists/whatever-you-wanna-call-them for $5 a bag. I guess these rich kids support this shop with their parents' money. For that price, i better be watching a movie. I'm definitely never going back, unless i lose all sense of taste and all perspective of time, so....maybe when i'm like 85 and senile.

Nice selection of meats, cheeses, breads, etc. Sandwich was slightly better than average, but nothing special. Prices weren't fantastic, either. Service was standard.

I'm disappointed in the new format. The ordering process is much more cumbersome and the wait to place an order has become too long. I'm fearful they will not be able to keep up with the volume of customers with this new process. The sandwiches are still great - it's just... is the wait now worth it?

This is my all time favorite place to get a sandwich. EVER. Period. I don't know what it is about it that makes is so amazing since my order is always the same and damn simple. What bums me out majorly is it used to be this awesome old homey place that was haphazard but lovable. They had mountains of hot sauces and weird fondu sets. All sorts of crazy awesomeness to peruse while waiting for your bigger-than-your-head sandwich. They have now "cleaned it up" and it is much more Palo Alto prep, but it's definitely lost a lot of it's charm. It also irks me that they always seem to have empty shelves and they have this huge refrigerator for cheese that I've never seen cheese in. If you're going to expand, fill the shelves! They also used to have an awesome staff. There was this one big black guy that was AMAZING. He was super friendly and would let us stand in the walk-in refrigeration when we were hungover and in pain. Now people are nice but not as... eccentric/eclectic/interesting. Just your run of the mill yuppy place now. However, as I write this, my mouth has began to water, and I wish with all my little heart that I was back in Cali placing my order. Whatever you enjoy on your sandwich, you have to get the dutch crunch, and you have to get the house spread.

Man. Except for my cholesterol level, I would love to come here everyday. And clearly many do. There are people who laminated their sandwich order and simply show the card. Ordering here is not for the faint of heart. Which meat, which cheese, which bread, and "everything?" After weeks of experimenting, you will come up with one or two that are just perfect for you. That's why you would laminate your order. I usually just eat half and take home the other half for dinner. The store is worth spending 30 minutes or so to stroll around too.

Oh my. Well I've been going to this place since high school and a whole lot has changed since that time. The whole restaurant has a different layout, but the sandwiches are still the same. You can't go wrong with a Cheese House sandwich if you get it with their original spread. It is gold. My personal sandwich of choice would have to be the corned beef on dutch crunch. Two thumbs up.

I have been coming here for years and will continue to come for as long as they are around. Every time I am in the neighborhood I can count of VCH making me a great sandwich. It is a similar set up to the Counter Burger. You simply fill out the form with want you want, grab your drinks or chips, then pay. I always get the smoked turkey with smoked gouda and the works on dutch crunch. Best ever.

I have no idea how this place has a 4-star average. We hated it. First of all, its really expensive for sandwiches. A basic sandwich is $8, but then they charge 75 cents if you want any cheese other than Swiss (yep, you can't get Cheddar or American for free) and $1.50 each for all premium ingredients like avocado, pesto, and premium cheeses. It's easy to get around $11 or $12 and the sandwiches aren't that big. We had 20% off coupons from the Stanford coupon books that they give away free to students and with that it was fairly reasonable, but without that it would have been a huge rip-off. Coupon is also available online here: coupons.stanford.edu Second, they had no idea how to use our coupons. The girl had to call over another guy who had to call over another guy. I could understand that normally, but they are literally a few hundred feet from Stanford campus and they distributed these coupons to thousands of Stanford students, so you'd think they'd become somewhat used to them. The girl at the cash register was a bit impatient with us too. Third, the wait was insane. From the time we set foot in the store to the time we got our sandwiches was 40 minutes. Yes, you read that right: FOURTY MINUTES. You can eat a sit down meal at some very decent restaurants in that time. We went at 11:45 and thought we would avoid the Paly lunch rush. Unfortunately we didn't, although the Paly kids were mostly getting pre-made stuff to go (which makes sense, because three class periods would pass in the time they waited for a made-to-order sandwich). However, even with the line and coupon snafus we had ordered within 10 minutes. Then we had to wait 30 minutes for them to throw some ingredients on the bread. That's all they do, since they don't even toast them. They had about 5 people making sandwiches and it seemed like they were averaging 1 sandwich per hour. I have no idea how they can be so inefficient. Fourth, and most importantly, the sandwiches were just really bad. I had the "veggie" (also $8 but comes with avocado instead of meat) and added fresh mozzarella for $1.50. Since I paid for the cheese I didn't feel like paying $1 for pesto and I'm not a fan of their free spreads (I'm not a mayo or mustard person), so I had oil and vinegar. Now, maybe I'm crazy, but I assumed they were going to put the oil and vinegar ON the sandwich. Nope, they gave it to me in a little dipping thing like you use for bread in an Italian restaurant! Why would I want to dunk my sandwich in oil?? The sandwich was boring. I should caveat this by saying that I am more of a hot sandwich person in general, but I have had cold sandwiches I liked a lot more than this one. The avocado was a mushy spread, and the fresh mozzarella was awful and tasted like the pre-packaged stuff you can buy at Safeway (ironic for a supposed CHEESE house). Their Dutch Crunch was decent, I'll give them that, but it had a sweetness to it that was weird on a savory sandwich, and it would have tasted a lot better toasted. My fiance had the roast beef & Swiss with mayo. He wasn't impressed at all. He said that even ignoring the price & the wait, it was a 2-star sandwich. And that's coming from a guy who had never met a sandwich he doesn't like. His sandwich also had a REALLY small amount of meat on it. One very thin layer of roast beef. You would think for $8 they could be a little more generous with the toppings. The food options in Town & Country are over-priced and sub-par quality in general (with the exception of Kara's Cupcakes which is over-priced but excellent), but this has to be the worst of all the places we've tried here so far.
